Anticipation – living in the now

Lebanese expressions are full of anticipation I find today.
I take some generic English expressions:
“Good night”
“Congratulations” – marriage, graduation, birth
“Happy birthday”

I take their Lebanese equivalent:
“Tosbaho a’ala kheir” (May you wake up with something good)
“A’akbelkoun” (May the next one be a marriage in your house) or “A’akbel
el A’ala” (May the next graduation be higher), or “Ne’echaaklon ma’a sale-
mto” (May we see another birth with the safety of this one)
“A’akbel el miyye” (May you live till a hundred) or “Yena’ad aleik” (May it
be repeated upon you)

Always the next one to come, never the current celebration, always the things
to come that will be worth celebrating more than what is being celebrated
now. Always the incurable hope of a better situation in the future so as to be
more content with the present being so transitory and all. Always a present
assumed a stepping stone for a future, a shape of a city that’s just here pass-
ing through for a future generation. “You never own a Patek Philippe, you
merely look for it for the next generation,” you never really destroy Beirut,
you merely distort its face for the next generation.

Inshallah (If God is willing).
