Catcher in the Rhyme 2005

Lovely it is to be

We are homeless without our TV sets,
We stream along on our cable channels,
We shower in our liquid crystal displays,
We are decoded by our decoders,
We are warmly received by our receivers,
We are orphaned without our electrical appliances,
We are prisoners of our mobility engendered by our automobiles,
We are cyberspace residents, but only tenants of fictive places,
We are, and how lovely it is to be.

We are the men that ask for directions,
We are the women that don’t need more shoes,
We are the dissidents that voted against the “office politics party”,
We are the people that still wear flowers in their hair,
We are the individuals that still smile annoyingly, defiantly, even sheepishly,
We are the strangers that do not see people as strange,
We are the “alone” ones who still see pretty faces,
We are, and how lovely it is to be.

I am the dormant matchmaker in every female,
I am the latent troublemaker in every male,
I am the childless widow’s post-menopausal hope of a baby,
I am every death row inmate’s wish of a parole officer,
I am the immigrant’s keychain for the house back home,
I am the holy man’s Freudian dreams in the space between sleep and awaken-
ing,
I am, and how lovely it is to be.

I am the unaccompanied traveler at the gates of dawn,
I am the “tables for one” that the solitary book in restaurants,
I am the inverted snobbishness that hotel staff manifests towards guests,
I am the politician that never gained weight after being elected,
I am the bodybuilder that still thinks he is too vulnerable and small,
I am, and how lovely it is to be.

You are my winter waiting for its hibernating bears,
You are my spring waiting for its awakening buds,
You are my summer waiting for its nightingales,
You are my autumn waiting for its falling leaves,
You are, and how lovely it is to be.

It is the neon light suddenly shining as I pass underneath it,
It is me answering the night guard “five to ten” before he even asks what
time it is,
It is my six months old nephew’s intelligible love declarations,
It is, and how lovely it is to be.

It is the left-handed man and his left-pawed cat,
It is the time taken to be at peace,
It is, and how lovely it is to be.

We are, I am, you are, it is,
And how lovely it is to be.
