Exodus 2003
The first rain (Sept. 5, 2003)
Today, it is the first rain,
And I will not rhyme it with pain,
It came a little early this year,
And I will not rhyme it with fear.
Everyone was perplexed and taken aback,
Wondering whether to dress warmly in black,
Umbrellas ridiculously topping beach-tanned faces,
Belly buttons were defiantly showing in some cases.
Carelessly wetting the streets and dirtying cars,
Water-drained windshields get the year’s first trial,
These harmless drops, suddenly seemed hostile,
On the city’s arteries, traces left look like scars.
But this is not some perched small village,
To the city, rain seems like a sacrilege,
There is no cozy smell of the humidified soil,
No snail-picking, or roasted potatoes with olive oil.
On such a day, a wolf is getting married, the superstition dictates,
Will it be a harsh winter this year? A farmer rightfully stipulates,
A young cousin is crying, for rain is an omen to go back to school,
Doesn’t he know that there’s plenty of summer left? The little fool.
Back in the urban life, no such trivial worries trouble the mind,
This rain forced you to change your daily timetable?
Shouldn’t the weather go with your plans, and be more stable?
Oh there should be a sensible solution, just sit back and unwind.
Worry not; you’re a mighty citizen of the metropolis,
Just call the maintenance department of the weather police,
They’re highly trained and will fix the problem in no time at all,
They’ll even cancel your free subscription to the winter and fall.
In my office, the A/C is still swinging to the summer tune,
Do I bother change it to adapt to the day’s main story?
The sun will be out, it’s a passing cloud, moving on soon,
And this entire episode will only remain as a bad memory.
Just a first rain that came early... Oh, it will pass!
And I will not rhyme it with pain,
It came a little early this year,
And I will not rhyme it with fear.
