SECAM 2007
VS Beirut
Versus is a separation between two entities, often if not always, antagonistic.
The Sharks and the Jets, the Caputlets and the Montagnes, the north and the
south, the good and the evil. But is there not a meeting point for antagonistic
entities, for contradictions? And what if the reference point or axis of clas-
sification was inverted, does not this mean that what was north is now south
and vice versa, what was good is now evil and the opposite true?
I am now reminded of a sculpture I have seen in Sweden. It was purchased,
according to the owner of the building I saw it in front of, as art (According
to Swedish law 1% of the budget of every building has to go to art). From the
very first second, it gripped me. There was something in it that was haunting.
It had a strange shape: Very wide, yet very thin. Seen from the transversal
side, it was almost straight in the middle but titled on both top and bottom.
It was only when I saw its title that I understood what was so mesmerizing
about it: The space between the Yin and the Yang.
Finally, someone had understood that the meeting place was more important
than what it was meant to separate. Versus no more. Welcome to contradic-
tion. You are entering Beirut.
