John

John, now and then

At twenty nine, John scrutinized his driving license,
In the photo, he saw one of those Raphaelite creatures,
Gay, young, fresh, and blessed with heavenly features,
His eyes filled with kudos, his soul filled with incense.

Overweight, balding, with what is left verging to gray,
He suffocated his cigarette butt in the ashtray,
And then declared, with the most seriousness seen:
“Today, I would fuck myself back when I was nineteen.”
