Exodus 2003
“Surrender”, or else!
The bumper sticker said: “Surrender to Jesus”,
I didn’t even know he was launching an attack,
And that we either surrendered or fought back,
And that between our names was the word “versus”.
I didn’t feel the trigger pointed to my head,
I never felt threatened or about to be dead,
Could it be that I am naïve and simple,
Could he have fooled me with his cute dimple?
I didn’t even see his blow coming,
And wasn’t aware of his second coming,
Wasn’t he supposed to be a sensible guy,
I wonder about the fear, and ask myself why?
Please, correct me if I am mistaken,
It has nowhere been said that one ought,
To be scared and have their bones shaken,
Or else the would never get what they sought.
According to my limited knowledge,
And we know how dangerous that can be,
Dread is not a prerequisite, so heaven we can see,
And to get there, need not suffer a hit by a sledge.
Jesus asked us to worship one God and no one else,
He never threatened us: Surrender to me or else!
Jesus himself had a problem surrendering to the Romans,
But had to do it to fulfill all the written predestining omens.
It’s Ok to love and trust him, and ask him for a helping hand,
Two thousand years after his resurrection, he’s a solid brand,
But I think that had he been with us in flesh today,
And had he been able to have things his own way…
… Even Jesus would not have “surrendered” to Jesus.
