Exodus 2003
Wings
The images rolled on, sharp and clean,
Desolate places, where have I been?
Strange visions, what have I seen?
Weren’t they supposed to cut this scene?
As I move along with no choice,
I feel someone confining my voice,
A forced passenger on a train,
Nothing to lose, nothing to gain.
The tunnel’s darkness thickens,
And my own heartbeat quickens,
On such a dark path I am a traveler,
Surrounded by ghastly passengers.
I see the ghost of Christmas past,
A quick visit that didn’t last,
Hold on there. Not so fast,
The unearthed backlog is so vast.
Spoiled fruits of my own creation,
I will cut this rotten stem of imagination,
They didn’t buy tickets for the ride,
From the controller trying to hide.
In the midst of the neon-lit obscurity,
A dim light appeared in security,
Just a small glimmer that wouldn’t fade,
One that wouldn’t be suffocated by shade.
As they slowly grew in intensity,
The rays killed the gloom in moves so furtive,
Neatly becoming more confident and assertive,
Warmth started spreading in forgotten corners,
Like prisoners overtaking their imposed wardens.
As the light stubbornly refused to go,
I felt blinded and missed the old show,
The end of the tunnel was drawing near,
Exasperation calls was all I could hear.
From my wagon I could not decipher,
How I became the train’s conductor,
To a messy situation the only doctor,
A tragedy in the making of a big caliber.
When the burrow started to recede,
The road refused to proceed,
Laid bricks vanishing from my eyes,
As if they were nothing but lies.
My only way out was to jump,
Either that, or falling into the dump,
Hanged between the sky and the earth,
It felt like another creation, a second birth.
The abyss looking uneven and ragged,
By gravity I refused to be dragged,
In the commotion, feathers I started to cast,
From invisible wings, I had grown in the past.
Learning to fly in that glorious moment,
Didn’t have to learn it, it was all within,
Simply accomplishing what was meant,
As my fear and confusion grew thin.
Going upwards on a shrouded route,
Unveiling on need to know basis,
I guess I was one of those cases,
Instinctively freed when given the boot.
As I gained a higher altitude,
I saw Icarus in his free fall,
I don’t want to be rude,
But he deserved to lose it all.
His escape was easy,
His story a little cheesy,
How stupid to have used wax,
And not paying his freedom-tax.
Up and up I flew,
To where I had no clue,
Jonathan Livingstone cheering,
A good ending was nearing.
Down below I threw a glance,
The tunnel and the train vanished,
Was I really that astonished?
No, not a chance.
They were never there anyway,
A temporary obstacle along the way,
Something from way back yonder,
Now six thousand feet under.
Destined to fly all along,
Why did it take me so long?
There were a few important things,
To begin with, I didn’t notice the wings!
Desolate places, where have I been?
Strange visions, what have I seen?
