July war 2006 — sources and method
During the war, 111101 followed four live news streams and saved them hour after hour in an outline (OmniOutliner), with a table of the Higher Relief Council figures and a list of protests abroad. The outline was archived in June 2009. Nothing here was rewritten: reports are quoted as they were published, in their language, with their source.
The four streams
- NouvelObs 3,015 reports · fr
- Le Nouvel Observateur live news feed, made of AFP wire dispatches, in French. Each item opens with the city it was filed from.
- Beawitness 2,524 reports · en
- Citizen live log of the war in English, quoting Israeli, Lebanese and international media (Haaretz, AP, Reuters, Naharnet, Israel Radio…).
- Tayyar 2,135 reports · en
- English live updates of tayyar.org, the Free Patriotic Movement news site, focused on strikes and casualties in Lebanon.
- LebanonUpdates 1,328 reports · en
- Lebanon Updates live blog in English. It republished many Tayyar items; those are folded into Tayyar here.
Method
- One clock: Beirut time
- NouvelObs stamped its feed in Paris time, one hour behind Beirut: its 07:00 item announces that the ceasefire “came into force at 05:00 GMT”, which LebanonUpdates logs at 08:00. NouvelObs items are moved forward one hour; hover a time to see the original stamp. Items filed after 23:00 Paris move to the next day.
- Repeats folded
- 1,934 LebanonUpdates items repeat Tayyar word for word, or nearly, within two minutes. They are shown once, under Tayyar, marked “+ LebanonUpdates”.
- Places
- 1,835 strikes come from the July war layer of the al Mashriq map already on 111101 (most citing As-Safir). Place names in the reports are matched against those places and their spellings in English and French; 721 places in all. Matching is automatic: a name shared by two villages points to one of them.
- Figures
- Higher Relief Council counts as noted by 111101 between 2 and 19 August 2006. They are the figures of their day.
- How to cite a report
- Every report has a permanent address. Click its time to get it, for example /facts/history/july2006/2006-07-30/#bea-20060730-1010-1: source, date and Beirut time.
- Rights
- The reports belong to their publishers (AFP for NouvelObs). They are kept here as a documentary record of how the war was reported hour by hour, with their source on every line.
